You may recall from my 35 Before 35 list that understanding and using essential oils for our family was a big goal for me this year. I’m so thankful for my dear friend Erin for encouraging us on our wellness journey. I have had a lot of questions and interest over on Instagram as we have used them and shared them more and as promised, I’m sharing a post with some of your most asked questions— some of the basics, along with some of our favorite oils and how we use them.
One thing I want to say is that the use of oils and the concept of wellness living is a JOURNEY. I certainly don’t know everything, and for us, using them is part of our commitment to this journey. I’m constantly learning new things, trying new combinations and having fun with it.
Living as clean and healthy of a life as possible has been a priority for me since becoming a mom. From what we eat to what products we use and more. I had been intrigued by essential oils for a while and always just felt overwhelmed by all of the options. Not knowing what information you could trust (plus taking the time to sift through it all!) which products actually had safe and trustworthy ingredients, how and when to use them...it seemed like a lot to add to my plate. Last winter Olivia and I were sick A LOT. And, thanks to Erin, we finally tried oils. To say I was blown away by our immune roller is an understatement. It kept us healthier for the rest of the season, we all felt better, and I was thrilled to have an alternative to traditional medicine. I was hooked. Since then we have leaned on oils for emotional wellness including for separation anxiety during Oliva’s first-time-to school transition, during other stressful moments that have helped bring us relaxation and joy. Also for specific ailments like tummy troubles, headaches, achy muscles...And so much more! I love not turning to ibuprofen and having safe tools on hand when things do pop up. Our diffuser is constantly going and our oil routine is something we just love and look forward to. When we leave in the morning Olivia is always asking if we can turn the diffuser back on when we get home and is always excited about getting her rollers before school and before bed. She even “gives them” to her stuffed animal friends :)
Oils are not a one size fits all. You may need a slightly different recipe than someone else, and sometimes the oils are not a quick fix; rather consistent use is what will really show the results. That said, everyone can benefit from the use of oils if you are interested in them.
As soon as I had my oils, I wanted to be able to jump into this journey with both feet, confidently knowing I was using the best and safest products on my family and also having the support of other like minded people that would be able to help me if I had any questions along the way. How do you use them?
There are three ways to use essential oils. You can use them aromatically, use them topically, or use them internally. All are effective ways to receive the benefits of them. So far we have been mostly diffusing and using topically and we love both methods. However you are using them, there are some safety rules to follow; including avoiding contact with eyes and properly diluting them (especially for kids!)
What Oils Should I Use?
There are endless options of oils to choose from depending on the support you need (literally 100s!) What Are Your Must Have Oils?
From the starter kit, I have several favorites. Stress Away, Thieves, Frankincense, Peppermint and Lavender have been most used for us so far. Though honestly, they are all wonderful. My other favorite oil that we use all the time is Valor. I purchased this separately and am so thankful we did. It’s known as Young Living’s “courage oil” or “brave ballerina oil” as we call it at our house :) Olivia has her own roller of this that we use on her in the morning and at night. We often diffuse this in the mornings before school as well. We also really love Peace and Calming. Olivia calls this “the candy oil” It smells amazing, and I don’t think she’s gone to bed without it since we got it!
Stress Away smells amazingI AMAZING. It’s might be my favorite so far. The name says it all. It’s an instant mood changer when I apply to myself topically or diffuse it at home. The house feels like a spa with this misting in the background! I’m obsessed.
Thieves is sortof the ultimate oil. It is seriously a powerhouse for boosting immunity and we will never be without it now that I know what a powerful tool it is for us! I have honestly never felt so empowered as a mama and I feel so confident going into the sniffles season this year. We use this every day in our immune roller. I also diffuse it for Olivia every night; usually with Lavendar or Peace and Calming. (P + C is not in the starter kit but it’s so amazing!)
Frankincense has become part of my nightly routine. I use it in my moisturizer every night and I immediately feel more grounded and relaxed. It also has amazing benefits for keeping your skin glowing and youthful. I can definitely notice a difference in the appearance of my skin.
Peppermint smells amazing and helps promote healthy digestion. We have used this topically for tummy aches paired with Digize. We no longer use Pepto or Tums. It’s amazing. It’s also great in the diffuser on it’s own or with other oils and makes you feel really alert and refreshed. I’ve got it going as I type this! :)
Lavendar is a mom favorite because it really helps promote restful sleep. In addition to wearing it topically or using in the diffuser, I know a lot of moms who make a linen spray and spray it on their babes’ pillows at night. It’s also a really versatile oil.
I could honestly say something amazing about every oil in the kit, so I will stop myself there. There are also so many on my wishlist that I haven’t used yet, so I will be sure to report back at a later time with any new faves.
I have really been so amazed by how these oils have helped our family. We all love them so much and have all reaped the benefits of using them.
